Avanza Tutoring Ministry

As a community of disciples on mission, St. Andrew’s seeks to glorify Christ by loving our closest neighbors. The Avanza tutoring ministry exists to support children in achieving their God-given potential.

Avanza is the Spanish word for “get moving” or “advance”. The Avanza tutoring ministry began as a partnership with Huntertown Elementary School to provide tutoring for English Language Learners in Woodford County. We provide the opportunity for each child to build relationships, discover Biblical truth, play, and learn. Our volunteer tutors give their time and energy to ensure each student is loved and valued.

In addition to serving the children at Huntertown Elementary School, the Avanza program has grown to include middle and high school Avanza graduates. This amazing group of young women aptly named themselves “God’s Girls.” Our goal is to cultivate strong friendships and provide mentor support for each girl as she navigates the challenges of school.

Each Wednesday, we pray and eat, share a devotion, and provide homework help for our students. God’s Girls has grown quickly in number while maintaining authenticity in relationships between students and tutors.

We are also working hard to begin “God’s Guys”, which will provide the same opportunities for the young men who have graduated from Avanza.
